Jörg Demus began his pianistic journey in Vienna under Walter Kerschbaumer, a disciple of Moritz Rosenthal. His debut solo recital took place in 1943, during World War II, with his initial concert activities primarily centered in Vienna throughout the immediate post-war years. The 1950s marked his emergence onto the international stage, with appearances across Europe, South America, and the United States. Despite garnering considerable acclaim, Demus remained dedicated to artistic growth, pursuing advanced studies with distinguished mentors. From 1953 to 1955, he worked privately in Paris with the eminent French pianist Yves Nat, subsequently attending Walter Gieseking’s masterclasses in Saarbrücken. His quest for excellence continued through participation in Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli’s summer courses at Arezzo in 1956, followed by enrollment in Wilhelm Kempff’s inaugural Beethoven interpretation seminar at Positano in 1957. This compilation presents previously unreleased broadcasts from the German Democratic Republic in Dresden, encompassing two live solo recitals and a notable interpretation of the Schumann Piano Concerto under the direction of Kirill Kondrashin.
