Heinz Stanske remains a relatively obscure figure among violin connoisseurs. A student of Maxim Jacobsen at Berlin’s Stern Conservatory, he launched his career in 1932 as concertmaster of the UFA-Tonfilm Orchester, contributing to the flourishing musical and spectacle films of the decade. His international breakthrough came in June 1937 with a gold medal at the International Competition for Singers, Violinists, and Cellists in Vienna. The following year, his official debut at Berlin’s Beethoven-Saal marked the beginning of widespread critical recognition, with conductor Carl Schuricht praising him as the most outstanding German violinist of his generation. Stanske’s early career highlights include the German premiere of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with the Dresden Staatskapelle under Karl Böhm in 1940, along with performances of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic (conducted by Schuricht) and Prokofiev’s Second Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic (again under Böhm). While his concert activities extended to Spain and Italy during World War II, his marriage to a violinist of Jewish heritage placed him in a precarious position under Nazi racial policies. This union resulted in his exclusion from German radio broadcasts, a restriction that remained in effect until the conclusion of World War II. Thereafter, Stanske resumed his career, and in 1950, Hans Rosbaud appointed him first concertmaster with special soloist duties at the Südwestfunk Orchestra Baden-Baden, a position he held until his retirement in 1971. This collection, comprising previously unreleased radio recordings, presents the breadth of his repertoire and seeks to foster a deeper appreciation of his artistic legacy.
